The Inspiration Behind "If Today You Hear His Voice"

Throughout our rich and inspiring Catholic history, many saints have proclaimed to have had a conversation with Christ or the Blessed Mother. I believe that everyone can hear the voice of God! He is as alive and involved in our lives today as He was when He walked the earth over two thousand years ago! God wants a loving relationship with each one of us. I believe that through the Holy Spirit, God has prompted me to write this book. My complete trust in His endless love and mercy has given me blessings beyond my wildest dreams. My prayer is for you to seek God in all things, walk with Him in your life journey, and listen to His voice.

“Oh, that today you would hear His voice! Do not harden your hearts (Psalm 95:7-8 TNAB).” Do you hear God’s voice speaking to you? I do. It is not a loud booming voice but a gentle nudge guiding me in His direction. Sometimes I do not listen, but He is patient. My God is an awesome God who loves you and me so very much! If you knew how much He loves you, it would make you cry! Of course, I am talking about tears of joy and of extreme gratitude. “For He is our God, we are the people He shepherds, the sheep in His hands. Oh, that today you would hear His voice (Psalm 95:7 TNAB)!”

Most days, my life is full of joy. I start the morning thanking God for waking up, the day, my amazing family, my strong faith, my health, my home, and all the many blessings He sends me each and every day. I also thank Him for all the things that have gone wrong, because He never leaves my side when bad things happen. I have an inner peace that only He can give, and I am truly thankful.

My relationship with God started at an early age. I was raised Catholic by an Irish mother, Dorothy Florence (Leary) Potts, and an English and Scottish father, James Bertrum Potts, Jr., whose ancestors converted to Catholicism.

I was the second oldest of five children. My Irish grandmother on my mother’s side, Florence G. (Meehan) Leary from Montreal, Canada, was raised in a convent after her mother died. She prayed the Rosary daily, and I think she must have prayed for me because I share her deep devotion to the Blessed Mother.

My grandfather on my dad’s side, James “Bert” Bertrum Potts, Sr., spent his last year bedridden and under an oxygen tent. He suffered from emphysema as a result of his long smoking habit. On his final day on January 26, 1966, he told his wife, my grandmother, Sarah “Sadie” Jane (MacDonald) Potts from Prince Edward Island, that he saw the Blessed Mother in the room. We all laughed when we heard that my grandmother had told him to tell the Blessed Mother to go away. We knew she did not want her husband to go on to the next life. But wow! The Blessed Mother came for him!!! This fact has always been a great comfort to me.

I was present when my dad died on November 5, 1997, and the look on his face revealed that he had seen the radiant glory of God. So, it is no surprise to me that I have been blessed with the knowledge that God is near and He does speak. I hear because I have learned to listen.
